{"id":508,"date":"2020-08-10T20:25:39","date_gmt":"2020-08-11T00:25:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.unliterate.net\/?p=508"},"modified":"2020-08-10T20:29:57","modified_gmt":"2020-08-11T00:29:57","slug":"thanks-veritasium-for-my-wikipedia-hole-it-dug-me","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.unliterate.net\/index.php\/2020\/08\/10\/thanks-veritasium-for-my-wikipedia-hole-it-dug-me\/","title":{"rendered":"Thanks Veritasium for my wikipedia hole it dug me"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Usually, I get into these Wikipedia holes that I call &#8220;wikipaths&#8221;, where one article leads to the next article, and as I approach the end I wonder &#8220;How did I get there?&#8221; <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here it goes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>It started with a Youtube video by Veritasium called &#8220;Why Einstein Thought Nuclear Weapons Impossible&#8221; [<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=HD3k1hgbUXQ\" target=\"_blank\">link<\/a>] The one thought that crossed my mind while watching this was &#8220;Who was the pilot that dropped the nuclear bombs on Japan?&#8221;&#8230;<\/li><li>A basic google search led to &#8220;Colonel Paul W. Tibbets, Jr.&#8221;, and then we work our way into this wikipath [<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Tibbets\" target=\"_blank\">link<\/a>]<\/li><li>In the third paragram it mentions what he did after the war: &#8220;After the war, he participated in the\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Operation_Crossroads\" target=\"_blank\">Operation Crossroads<\/a>\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nuclear_weapon\" target=\"_blank\">nuclear weapon<\/a>\u00a0tests at\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bikini_Atoll\" target=\"_blank\">Bikini Atoll<\/a>\u00a0in mid-1946,&#8221;, and thus we lead on to Bikini Atoll<\/li><li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bikini_Atoll\" target=\"_blank\">Bikini Atoll<\/a> was a HUGE READ, including the islands, the civilization, and the fact that the indigenous people only cared about the land until the US came in and blew shit up. Afterward, I read how they used tourism to try to bring people to the islands until their only plane crapped out [link]<\/li><li>This also led to a film, &#8220;Mondo Cane&#8221; [<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mondo_Cane\" target=\"_blank\">link<\/a>], and a reference to Bikini Atoll in that film. When I read about &#8220;Mondo Cane&#8221; I thought to myself &#8220;I have to have this movie&#8221;, so I found a torrent [<a href=\"magnet:?xt=urn:btih:DA27E6DA42E5B47199C53A65EC6054844D40B24A&amp;dn=Mondo.Cane.Collection.DVDRip.1962-1971.%5B5.Movies%5D.%5BGS%5D&amp;tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.coppersurfer.tk%3A6969%2Fannounce&amp;tr=udp%3A%2F%2F9.rarbg.to%3A2920%2Fannounce&amp;tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.opentrackr.org%3A1337&amp;tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.internetwarriors.net%3A1337%2Fannounce&amp;tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.leechers-paradise.org%3A6969%2Fannounce&amp;tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.coppersurfer.tk%3A6969%2Fannounce&amp;tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.pirateparty.gr%3A6969%2Fannounce&amp;tr=udp%3A%2F%2Ftracker.cyberia.is%3A6969%2Fannounce\">magnet<\/a>] that contains not only that 1962 movie, but 1963, 1966, 1971, and the 2003 movies as well.<\/li><li>This also led to the first person who modeled the first Bikini, a lovely  Micheline Bernardini [<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Micheline_Bernardini\" target=\"_blank\">link<\/a>], who not only is still alive but modeled the same bikini 40 years her elder in 1986. [<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gettyimages.com\/detail\/news-photo\/forty-years-after-modeling-the-first-bikini-on-july-5-news-photo\/635232931\" target=\"_blank\">link<\/a>]<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>All in all I was really impressed with being able to backtrack this one.
