I went ahead and purchased a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newegg.com\/wd-elements-14tb-black-usb-3-0-micro-b\/p\/N82E16822234411?Item=N82E16822234411\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">WD Elements 14TB USB 3.0<\/a> external hard drive, proceeded to format it down and get it ready for storing all my useful content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From October 2021 to July 2025 I completely filled that volume up, and just recently hit the 100% usage. What to do? By the looks of the graph I figured that out without having to delete any files&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unliterate.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/compression-extreme.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"672\" height=\"358\" src=\"https:\/\/www.unliterate.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/compression-extreme.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2293\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.unliterate.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/compression-extreme.png 672w, https:\/\/www.unliterate.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/compression-extreme-300x160.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 672px) 100vw, 672px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<!--more-->\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>&#91;matt@thinwheat usb14]$ sudo du -h --max-depth=1 2>\/dev\/null\n16K     .\/lost+found\n554G    .\/VHS-Video\n5.1T    .\/Video\n5.1T    .\/Twitch\n86G     .\/Video.fsem\n4.0K    .\/repos-backup\n2.3T    .\/Archive-backup\n88G     .\/Camera\n14.0T    .<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<p>The initial assessment of all my content found that I had 5.1TB of &#8220;streaming twitch&#8221; videos inefficiently stored in x264\/near lossless. I also had other video content that was stored in other formats but I was more certain that the twitch videos could be renovated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately I couldn&#8217;t do all this work on my linux host since was only running <code>4 x Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz<\/code>, and that&#8217;s not gonna chew through anything quick and easy. I decided to employ my windows host which boasts <code>12 x AMD Ryzen 5 5600x @ 3.70GHz<\/code>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The compression was straight forward with <code>ffmpeg<\/code>: <code>libx265, crf 22, preset medium<\/code>. No changing audio since that would give me no significant advantage to saving disk space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>11 days later I was able to compress 5.1TB of data to 1.1TB of smoothly beautiful data.
